In 1988 a number of members of Cirencester’s Town Twinning Association sought help in learning some American Square Dancing in order to participate in the Centenary celebrations of their Twin Town of Itzehoe near Hamburg in Northern Germany. Peter Wright, a dancer from Cheltenham, agreed to teach them the Basic moves in time for the visit in August 1988. The visit took place, and the group were hooked and determined to continue dancing.
Corinium Squares was formally registered as a Square Dance Club early in 1989, and the Club’s first Graduation was held on Saturday October 21st 1989 in Cirencester’s Town Council Chamber (by the kind offices of one of our members who was at that time Deputy Mayoress). Eleven members graduated and the club has grown steadily over the years, having a membership peak of over 100 in 2008.
Another dancer from Cheltenham, Ian Davis, offered to learn to call and continue to teach the Cirencester group. Tragically, after only a few months, he died from a heart attack on January 19th 1989 at the age of just 39, and Peter Wright took over as a temporary measure in February 1989. He is still there!
