On Saturday 19th May, after a day of television watching Royal Wedding, rugby semi finals and a football cup final, some 80 square dancers made their way to Deer Park School, Cirencester to enjoy Corinium’s Summer Square Dance. Dancers came from a wide area representing their clubs which included, Centre Squares, Bristol, Thornbury Squares, Cheltenham Swinging Squares, Trailblazers Devizes, Nailsea Diamonds, Lune Valley Lancaster, Portishead and from overseas, Frankfurt, Duisburg, Mulheim (Germany) and South Carolina (USA).

They all came to enjoy the calling of Brian Hotchkies from Kanwal, Australia. Brian has been a guest of Corinium every other year and this was his 4th visit. His reputation as one of the best callers from Australia attracting dancers from a very wide area.

Brian’s interesting, quick calling kept the dancers on their toes until the mid evening break when a  “Pot – Luck” supper, well organised by Phyllis Wright, Corinium’s Catering Officer, and her helpers, was served.

The Club charity raffle for the Scrubditch Care Farm, North Cerney, with some dozen prizes, raised £140 and concluded the interval.

Dancing continued after the break with dancers enjoying Brian’s “Progressive Squares” (9 squares in a box formation where dancers move from one square to another, but, end up in the original formation). In addition he managed to call some “Tandem Squares” (where a square of 8 have another square of 8 outside the original 8 making a square of 16!)

Thus making it a little more difficult, but most enjoyable, than a normal square of 8!!

Dancing continued until late evening when dancers made their way home, tired but happy having enjoyed a full evening of fun and friendship set to music.
